Here are some recommended tools we use in our own development:

  • Eclipse, an open source, multi-platform editor.
  • Navicat, (not free) but a good multi-platform database management console for MySQL. We've had problems with the Mac version but it's generally okay.
  • PHPMyAdmin is an open source, Web-based database management console alternative to Navicat. We just prefer Navicat because using an application is faster and more secure for us.
  • CVS Tutorial We use CVS for source code management. We've found the RedBean support site to provide the clearest, simplest examples.
  • SourceForge Free, project hosting site for the open source community.
